It’s easy to start the year with good intentions. You want to earn more, work less, grow your team, or finally sort your finances.
But vague goals like “make more money” or “get better at managing the business” don’t lead to real change.
This week, we’re diving into how to set goals that actually move the needle in your construction business.
What Makes a Good Business Goal?
Forget fluffy resolutions. A good goal is:
✉️ Specific – What exactly are you trying to achieve? “Increase profit by 20%” is better than “make more money.”
📈 Measurable – If you can’t track it, you won’t know if you’re succeeding. Define the numbers: turnover, profit, days off, hours worked, or quotes sent.
🤝 Realistic – Stretch yourself, but be honest. If you’re currently taking no wage, aiming to pay yourself £10k/month by March probably isn’t doable.
🏛️ Relevant – Choose goals that align with your vision. Don’t chase someone else’s idea of success.
📆 Time-bound – Set a deadline. “By June” or “before the summer holidays” gives you urgency and focus.
Examples of Smart Goals for Builders
- Increase net profit margin to 15% by September
- Take every Friday afternoon off by April (without sacrificing income)
- Hire one new team member by June
- Create a 3-month cashflow forecast and review it monthly
- Pay yourself a fixed salary by March
Start with one or two clear goals. Don’t overload yourself – the idea is progress, not pressure.
How to Break Goals Into Actionable Steps
Big goals are great. But they mean nothing without a plan.
Once you’ve set a goal:
- Write down why it matters to you
- Break it down into monthly and weekly actions
- Allocate time to work on it – just like you would a job
- Identify any tools, systems or support you’ll need
If your goal is to increase profit, weekly steps might include reviewing job costing, analysing overheads, or increasing pricing on certain services.
If your goal is more time off, it might involve delegating quotes or improving project scheduling.
